Hi all,
I’m on a plane from Frankfurt, Germany to Orlando completing my first visit to Morocco…my first night in Morocco there was a powerful earthquake that killed over 2,500 and injured thousands more…2 days later we honor the memory of the 9/11 terrorist attack on our country…I thank everyone who took the time to write and offer condolences…in life, we really never know what will happen and we should never take anything for granted…
I started this a week ago on my way back to the USA from Morocco…it is week later, I am now in Dubai on my way to Sri Lanka, India,, Pakistan, and Dubai…I’ve spent the last week pretty sick with Covid, doing everything I could to get well enough to be able to get on the flight and not be a threat to anyone…I found out there is an emergency Covid prescription drug that has amazing affects…it is 6 pills a day for 5 days….yesterday I tested negative, felt better and prepared for this visit…the pharmacy assured me I am good and could not infect anyone…I’m still partially wearing a mask but I think each day is a positive step…to have it in the past…
We have to stay positive and always be thankful… remembering to do our best, enjoy everything we do, believe in ourselves, and let those we care about most know I always say this, we all need to take it to heart…hugs and smiles. STAY SAFE, TAKE CARE, Love ya, Gabe
Amazing adventures around the world as more and more nations, commercial companies, and private industry advance to new challenges…it is awesome to be near Kennedy Space Center, launches every week, Space X continues to take satellites to space for countries around the world, United Launch Alliance developing new rockets, Blue Origin, Boeing, Lockheed all gearing up…India, Japan, launching missions to the moon and the sun…NASA moving forward with Artemis and sending astronauts back to the Moon and eventually Mars…Hubble and James Webb exploring the Solar System, Galaxies, and the Universe…an exciting time around the world as space exploration is constantly growing…

Here, the training model of the sample return capsule is seen during a drop test in preparation for the retrieval of the sample return capsule from NASA's OSIRIS-REx mission, Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2023, at the Department of Defense's Utah Test and Training Range. The sample was collected from asteroid Bennu in October 2020 by NASA’s OSIRIS-REx spacecraft and will return to Earth on September 24th, landing under parachute at the Utah Test and Training Range.

NASA is inviting the public to take part in virtual activities ahead of the OSIRIS-REx (Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security-Regolith Explorer) asteroid sample return mission. This mission will help scientists investigate how planets formed and how life began, as well as improve our understanding of asteroids that could impact Earth.
NASA’s OSIRIS-REx, the first U.S. mission to collect a sample from an asteroid, will return to Earth on Sunday, Sept. 24, with material from the asteroid Bennu. When it arrives, the spacecraft will release the capsule containing pieces of Bennu over Earth’s atmosphere. The capsule will parachute to the Department of Defense's Utah Test and Training Range, where the OSIRIS-REx team will be waiting to retrieve it.
Members of the public can register <https://www.eventbrite.com/e/nasas-osiris-rex-asteroid-sample-return-mission-registration-616070923717?aff=webfeature> to attend the sample return virtually. As a virtual guest, you will have access to curated resources and mission specific information delivered straight to your inbox. Following each activity, virtual guests are sent a mission specific collectable stamp for their virtual guest passport. Don’t miss this exclusive stamp! It's only our second event stamp that's not a rocket!
Live coverage will begin at 10 a.m. EDT on Sept. 24 and air on NASA Television and the agency’s website <http://www.nasa.gov/live>, as well as YouTube <https://www.youtube.com/nasa>, X <https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Ftwitter.com%2Fnasa&data=05%7C01%7Camanda.s.vozeh%40nasa.gov%7Cabb97d0e27934decb37208db84adda96%7C7005d45845be48ae8140d43da96dd17b%7C0%7C0%7C638249654448713563%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=xUhvtGrT2HJKQcnHtRiwMruXfJKn8FsEzyubb185OKM%3D&reserved=0>, Facebook <https://www.facebook.com/NASA/>, and NASA’s App <https://www.nasa.gov/nasaapp>.

A recovery team member takes part in field rehearsals in preparation for the retrieval of the sample return capsule from NASA's OSIRIS-REx mission <https://www.nasa.gov/osiris-rex> in this image from Aug. 29, 2023. The sample of rocks and dust, which the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft collected from the asteroid Bennu in Oct. 2020, will return to Earth on Sept. 24, safely landing at the Department of Defense's Utah Test and Training Range. The sample will give generations of scientists a window into the time when the Sun and planets were forming about 4.5 billion years ago.

NASA's Ingenuity helicopter breaks altitude record on 59th Mars flight

NASA's Ingenuity helicopter keeps pushing the boundaries of off-Earth flight.
The 4-pound (1.8 kilograms) Ingenuity <https://www.space.com/ingenuity-mars-helicopter-perseverance-rover> aced its 59th Mars <https://www.space.com/47-mars-the-red-planet-fourth-planet-from-the-sun.html> sortie on Saturday (Sept. 16), soaring higher than ever before in the process.
"Ingenuity has set a new record! The #MarsHelicopter successfully completed Flight 59, flying its highest altitude yet — 20 meters [66 feet]. The rotorcraft was in the air for 142.59 seconds," officials with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California, which manages the helicopter's mission, posted on X <https://twitter.com/NASAJPL/status/1704157637477384355> (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday (Sept. 19).
NASA's mighty SLS megarocket for Artemis moonshots 'unaffordable' for sustained exploration, audit finds

NASA needs to be more transparent about the costs and schedules associated with its Space Launch System (SLS) moon rocket, a newly released audit has found.
SLS <https://www.space.com/33908-space-launch-system.html> is NASA's rocket of choice for its Artemis program <https://www.space.com/artemis-program.html>, which aims to establish a permanent, sustainable presence on and around the moon by the end of the 2020s. But that ambitious goal may be tough to achieve given how expensive SLS is, according to the audit, which was conducted by the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) and released on Thursday (Sept. 7).
"Senior NASA officials told GAO that at current cost levels, the SLS program is unaffordable," according to the GAO report <https://www.gao.gov/assets/gao-23-105609.pdf>, which was delivered to the congressional committees that have jurisdiction over NASA's budget. The SLS program's cost "exceeds what NASA officials believe will be available for its Artemis missions," the report's authors added.
