Mars Sample Return Artist's Concept

This illustration shows a concept for a set of future robots working together to ferry back samples from the surface of Mars collected by NASA's Mars Perseverance rover <https://www.nasa.gov/perseverance>.
NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA) are solidifying concepts for a Mars sample return mission <https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/missions/mars-sample-return-msr> that would seek to take the samples of Martian rocks and other materials being collected and stored in sealed tubes by NASA's Mars Perseverance rover and return the sealed tubes to Earth. Image Credit: NASA/ESA/JPL-Caltech

According to the current concept, NASA would deliver a Mars lander in the vicinity of Jezero Crater, where Perseverance (left) will have collected and cached samples. The Sample Retrieval Lander (right) would carry a NASA rocket (the Mars Ascent Vehicle), along with ESA's Sample Fetch Rover (center) that is roughly the size of the Opportunity Mars rover. The fetch rover would gather the cached samples and carry them back to the lander for transfer to the ascent vehicle; additional samples could also be delivered directly by Perseverance. The ascent vehicle would then launch a special container holding the samples into Mars orbit. ESA would put a spacecraft in orbit around Mars before the ascent vehicle launches. This spacecraft would rendezvous with and capture the orbiting samples before returning them to Earth. NASA would provide the capture and containment payload module for the orbiter.

Behold an Aurora Over the Southern Skies

For the first time in history, scientists may have just discovered a planet in another galaxy.

The potential exoplanet, called M51-ULS-1b, lies 28 million light-years away in the spiral galaxy Messier 51 (M51), also known as the Whirlpool galaxy. This discovery could be just the tip of the iceberg, revealing many other exoplanets outside the Milky Way.

"We are trying to open up a whole new arena for finding other worlds," Rosanne Di Stefano, an astrophysicist at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics who led the study which found this object, said in a statement.

NASA will hold a virtual media briefing at 3 p.m. EDT Thursday, Oct. 28, to discuss the latest results from the agency’s Juno spacecraft. The science team will reveal new findings that provide the first 3D look at how the planet’s roiling atmosphere operates underneath the top layers of clouds, and how these revelations offer insight into the atmospheres of giant planets elsewhere in the universe.

The event will take place from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California, which manages the Juno mission. It will be livestreamed on NASA Television <https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Furldefense.us%2Fv3%2F__https%3A%2Fwww.nasa.gov%2Fmultimedia%2Fnasatv%2F*public__%3BIw!!PvBDto6Hs4WbVuu7!diyD9UhCaKMj_CjyNYCl_Bq36qVxhzK4heFeid9W8nRSlWkmiVcCsZvk2cLAnjEVkMBH6dqmRQ%24&data=04%7C01%7Chqnews%40newsletters.nasa.gov%7C835926d27db541a9dd8608d997da78fa%7C7005d45845be48ae8140d43da96dd17b%7C0%7C0%7C637707786856387624%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=BIkNMaOL6Htk34ikev9cAI2Wsva0Y2YxqDPZ%2FNoiTIY%3D&reserved=0>, the NASA app <https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Furldefense.us%2Fv3%2F__https%3A%2Fwww.nasa.gov%2Fconnect%2Fapps.html__%3B!!PvBDto6Hs4WbVuu7!diyD9UhCaKMj_CjyNYCl_Bq36qVxhzK4heFeid9W8nRSlWkmiVcCsZvk2cLAnjEVkMCUZn5YSw%24&data=04%7C01%7Chqnews%40newsletters.nasa.gov%7C835926d27db541a9dd8608d997da78fa%7C7005d45845be48ae8140d43da96dd17b%7C0%7C0%7C637707786856387624%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=3mGD7Co9pOj9GrrQOK76blPYY%2Ba3ZYEvFRjlHr6ekKA%3D&reserved=0>, the agency’s website <https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Furldefense.us%2Fv3%2F__https%3A%2Fwww.nasa.gov%2Flive__%3B!!PvBDto6Hs4WbVuu7!diyD9UhCaKMj_CjyNYCl_Bq36qVxhzK4heFeid9W8nRSlWkmiVcCsZvk2cLAnjEVkMB2ZLe5zA%24&data=04%7C01%7Chqnews%40newsletters.nasa.gov%7C835926d27db541a9dd8608d997da78fa%7C7005d45845be48ae8140d43da96dd17b%7C0%7C0%7C637707786856397684%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=zv7Kpglup4lLu02Dtn12NEHbJt%2F7pUiwNKQLKwR5K8M%3D&reserved=0>, NASA YouTube <https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3D21X5lGlDOfg&data=04%7C01%7Chqnews%40newsletters.nasa.gov%7C835926d27db541a9dd8608d997da78fa%7C7005d45845be48ae8140d43da96dd17b%7C0%7C0%7C637707786856397684%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=kZ%2BBogo8Jf9VZmbilg1hF%2FKOBhtLFYX80TXpIX4ITiA%3D&reserved=0> and Twitter <https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Ftwitter.com%2Fnasa&data=04%7C01%7Chqnews%40newsletters.nasa.gov%7C835926d27db541a9dd8608d997da78fa%7C7005d45845be48ae8140d43da96dd17b%7C0%7C0%7C637707786856407537%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=8GbBvBqcaRQ67Rk3eP4e1X6zA4NXqDdoY%2FRRZ5IgNvk%3D&reserved=0>.
.Juno has been orbiting and monitoring Jupiter since 2016. The spacecraft is now in an extended mission designed to expand on discoveries it already has made about Jupiter’s interior structure, internal magnetic field, atmosphere, and magnetosphere. It will also involve close passes of Jupiter’s north polar cyclones, future flybys of the moons Europa and Io, and the first exploration of the faint rings encircling the planet.
JPL, a division of Caltech in Pasadena, California, manages the Juno mission. Juno is part of NASA’s New Frontiers Program, which is managed at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, for the agency’s Science Mission Directorate in Washington. Lockheed Martin Space in Denver built and operates the spacecraft.
