good morning all,
Had great trip to Georgia, kind of whirlwind and it was so cold…..also saw some snow…kind of crazy as I left Florida wearing a T-shirt and by the time I got there, 8 hours later, I was layered for Norway & Denmark :-) actually it was colder in Ga and saw more snow…. the kids were so excited seeing big fluffy flakes and of course most were hoping the schools would close….the visits to Hall Middle, Da Vinci Academy, Spout Springs Elementary, & Tadmore Elementary went great, Tadmore was different as I spoke with kids from K-4th grade at the same time, which to me is too wide an age gap to be effective but it went very well….the kindergartners hung in there, stayed attentive, and seems do enjoy it as well as all the kids. I would like to thank my good friend Kelly for inviting me and arranging visits to all the schools. I am sure you are all celebrating Valentine’s Day with the kids and believe schools in the States are off Monday so you will have a long weekend... wishing you a wonderful day...we have to remember to always do our best, enjoy everything we do, live in the present, make each day special, let those we care about most know, smile and have fun... Gabe

New X-ray Space Observatory to Study Black Holes and History of Galaxy Clusters
Black hole enthusiasts, galaxy cluster aficionados, and X-ray astronomers have much to be excited about. On Friday, Feb. 12, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) will be launching their sixth satellite dedicated to X-ray astronomy, ASTRO-H, from the Tanegashima Space Center in Kagoshima, Japan. The observatory carries a state-of-the-art instrument and two telescope mirrors built at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. The launch is scheduled at 3:45 a.m. EST <http://www.nasa.gov/content/jaxa-youtube-live-astro-h-launch>.

ASTRO-H is expected to provide breakthroughs in a wide variety of high-energy phenomena in the cosmos, ranging from the superheated material on the brink of falling into a black hole to the evolution of vast galaxy clusters. It is equipped with four advanced instruments covering a broad energy range, from low-energy, or "soft," X-rays around 300 electron volts (eV) to soft gamma rays up to 600,000 eV. For comparison, the energy of visible light spans about 2 to 3 eV.

This illustration shows the locations and energy ranges of ASTRO-H science instruments and their associated telescopes. One keV equals 1,000 electron volts, which is hundreds of times the energy of visible light.

Feb. 9, 1995, Bernard Harris and Michael Foale Ready For a Spacewalk

STS-63 <http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/shuttle/shuttlemissions/archives/sts-63.html> astronauts Bernard A. Harris, Jr., payload commander (right), and C. Michael Foale, mission specialist (left), are ready to exit space shuttle Discovery's airlock for a spacewalk on Feb. 9, 1995. The pair would test modifications to their spacesuits to keep spacewalkers warmer in the extreme cold of space. The astronauts were also scheduled to practice handling the approximately 2,500-pound (1,134-kilogram) SPARTAN spacecraft to rehearse space station assembly techniques, but this task was cut short by Mission Control after the men reported feeling very cold in their suits. On this extravehicular activity (EVA), which lasted 4 hours and 38 minutes, Bernard Harris <http://www.jsc.nasa.gov/Bios/htmlbios/harris.html> became the first African-American to walk in space.

8/16/2012 -- the last time for these two magnificent vehicles to meet on the tow way ...
